“Before you take a bite at your barbecue, before you jump in the pool, think about those who gave their lives for that freedom.” Those were the words of VFW Post 5303 Commander Danny Jones at the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Oaklawn Cemetery in Woodsfield on Memorial Day, May 25.

Like many Monroe County families in their generation, Lawrence and Ella Kahrig had a lot of children. There were 14 to be exact, including nine sons and five daughters. In an incredible story of service to the country, a total of eight of their children, including one of the daughters, served in the military.

“A special gift of love made just for you.” That is the message sown on every blanket made by the My Very Own Blanket organization, which has a local chapter in Sardis.
