On Dec. 22, the River Pilots made a long 137-mile journey to Berlin, to contest the two-time defending state champion Hiland Hawks. The Hawks gained an early lead, but the Pilots bounced back with an 8-0 run to claim a 14-9 lead. However, the second quarter began with an 11-0 Hiland run. At the half, the Pilots were in the game trailing 27-22. However, Hiland nailed a three on the opening possession of the second half. Jordan Indermuhle scored his first points of the game on the following possession. River tied the game late in the third quarter at 33 all. The Hawks quickly bounced back to claim a two point lead 35-33. Hiland went for the final shot of the quarter. The shot was made, but the officials waived it off, saying the ball was still in the shooters hand as the buzzer sounded. The final quarter began with River trailing 35-33. Hiland scored a field goal in the opening minute and was fouled. They made the free throw, but Brett Price came back down the court to nail a shot from downtown. with 3:52 remaining River trailed 42-36. Late in the game, Hiland reclaimed a nine point lead (the largest lead of the night). The score was 47-42 with just under 2 minutes remaining. At this point, River began its full court press. River forced a turnover, but Price missed two shots in the following possession. River fell to a very good 6-1 Hiland Hawks team (only losing to Garaway in their last game) by the final score of 51-42.
Price was the leading scorer of both teams in the game with 23 points. Matt Marconi contributed 10 points. Indermuhle added 4 points. Chad Isaly had 3 points, while Cody Caldwell netted 2 points.
The Pilot Wrestling team participated in a Pioneer Valley Conference Super Tri at Monroe Central High School on Dec. 22.
River prevailed victorious over Monroe Central by a 40-35 final tally. There was a double forfeit in the 106 weight class. Monroe Central’s Ryan Ruble (113) won by forfeit. Rodney Richter won by technical fall over River’s Joshua Stewart (120). Jaren Hupp pinned Luke Gillies (126) of River in 3:59. Chase Carothers pinned River’s Loren Thomas (132) in 1:47. Chase Young (138) of River pinned Patrick Craig in 0:56. Bailey Reusser (145) of River won by forfeit. Zac Potts pinned River’s Freddie Mundt (152) in 4:29. Jordan Sapp (160) of River defeated Mikey Jones by a 13-4 major decision. River’s Kole Smith (170) pinned Anthony Block in 1:06. Dakota Dunn (182) and Brett Rosen (195) of River won by forfeit. River’s Joseph Dotson (220) pinned Justin Kilburn in 0:55. Colton Robinson pinned River’s Hank Goble (285) in 1:53.
