The Lady Pilots’ game at St. Clairsville on Saturday, December 29th was canceled, but it has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 12th at 1 P.M.

However, the boys game at the Marietta Tournament was still played. Athens High School was 6-1 coming into the game only losing 48-46 to Wellston. The Pilots were 4-2 coming into the week.

With 1:56 remaining in the first quarter, River forced Athens to call a timeout because they jumped out with a 19-10 lead. However, Athens fought their way back into the game and closed the opening period with the Pilots holding on to a slim lead of 20-17.

Athens began to gain momentum in the second quarter, as they switched from a zone to a man-to-man defense. By halftime, River was trailing by the score of 37-34.

The Pilots became recomposed in the third quarter. As the buzzer sounded, they reclaimed a lead at 60-59.

Athens went on a 12-3 run early in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 71-63 with 3:43 remaining. River began a press defense and hit some important shots in a late 9-2 rally. This brought River within one point at 73-72, as Cody Caldwell nailed a three from the top of the key.

Athens made the front end of a one-and-one, but they missed the second. River took the ball down the court, took a shot, and Chad Isaly got the rebound. Then, a jump ball was called with 8.4 remaining, but the possession arrow was in Athen's favor. Upon inbound, River committed a foul, and Athens made both shots to bring the score to a 76-72 final, with the Pilots falling just short.

Cody Caldwell received MVP honors for the game, scoring 29 points on 2 free throws and an incredible 9 threes. He was 64.2 percent from downtown. Caldwell, also, had one rebound and 3 assists. Brett Price was the second leading scorer with 18 points. He was 50 percent from behind the arch. Price, also, had 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Eric Dierkes had 9 points, shooting 100 percent from the field. He had one rebound and 2 assists. Jordan Indermuhle had 7 points and 6 rebounds. Matt Marconi added 5 points, 2 rebounds and 7 assists. Chad Isaly contributed 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Kam Brown had 4 rebounds and 1 assist, while Evan Eggleston had 2 rebounds. Brown, Eggleston, Marconi and Caldwell each had 1 steal. The team shot 52 percent from the field and had 20 rebounds.
