The frigid morning weather was no obstacle for the dozens of people who waited in line for the grand opening of Shopko Hometown on Jan. 10.  The store, which replaces the recently closed Pamida, has been open since before Christmas. However, their stock was not full and renovation had yet to be completed until this month. The celebration of the day was highlighted by a ribbon cutting ceremony, a check presentation and several give a ways.

The doors were set to open at 8:45 a.m., but several people were awaiting the opening in the cold by 8:15. The biggest draw for customers was a $10 gift card give a way to the first 100 customers. Also on hand were prize drawings along with cookies and coffee.

Attending the event were several local officials. Present were Monroe County Chamber members; Monroe County CIC members; Monroe County Commissioners Carl Davis, John Pyles and Tim Price; and Woodsfield Mayor Bill Bolon. Many of those local officials participated in the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

The other big event of the morning was the presentation of a check from the Shopko Hometown Foundation to Monroe Central High School. The check, in the amount of $2,500, was accepted by Monroe Central principal Jerry Calder. Calder said of the donation, “We really appreciate it. It will be money well-spent.” According to Calder, the money will go into the school's office account which is used for scholarship banquets and other student-centered events.

Woodsfield needed more? I'd hate to see the long established local stores under more pressure than they have now.
