The Monroe Central Seminoles boys varsity basketball team had a rough week with two losses against quality area teams. First on tap for the Seminoles were the Magnolia Blue Eagles on Jan. 30 on the road. The Seminoles were out-matched throughout the game by Magnolia. They fell behind 24-14 after one quarter. After gaining four points in the second quarter, the Seminoles were overwhelmed by a third-quarter score of 36-9. In the end, they were dealt a crushing blow with a forty-point loss of 98-58.
Only two Seminole players found double digits in the loss with Cameron Jorris leading the team with 14 points and Korey Lafferre scoring 10. Other players contributing were Levi Brown (seven points), Bryan Duffy (five points), Zack Jorris (four points), Josh Guiler (four points) and Chandler Kuhn (four points).
The Seminoles didn't get any rest as they went from a tough Magnolia squad to face PVC-juggernaut Fort Frye on Feb. 1 for Senior Night. The game was close throughout with Fort Frye breaking away at the end.
The first quarter ended with a 12-11 Fort Frye lead. However, on the Seminoles' first possession in the second quarter, Cameron Jorris nailed a three to give the Seminoles a 14-12 lead. The second quarter went back and forth with Fort Frye leading by a slim one-point margin of 26-25 going into halftime.
Monroe Central opened the third quarter with a hoop to take a 27-26 lead. By the end of the third, they had opened a 40-35 lead. Fort Frye opened the fourth quarter with a three point shot to pull within two. After several Monroe Central turnovers, Fort Frye opened up a three-point lead with 5:15 to play. Two consecutive Levi Brown jumpers brought Monroe Central within one point at 47-46 before Fort Frye pulled away, outscoring the Seminoles 10-2 in the final minutes for a 57-48 final score.
