The number four seed Monroe Central boys basketball team faced stiff local competition in the OVAC tournament. After falling to eventual runner-up Buckeye Trail, the Seminoles lost in the consolation game to in-county rival River.
The Seminoles looked primed to make a tournament run after dominating Buckeye Trail on Feb. 9 by a score of 78-56. However, the Seminoles faced a more determined Buckeye Trail team on Feb. 12 in the opening round of the OVAC tournament. Monroe Central made it look like deja-vu as they opened up a 30-24 lead to begin the third quarter. But, Buckeye Trail quickly reversed course and cruised the rest of the way for a 80-59 victory.
The Seminoles were led in the loss by Cameron Jorris and Korey Lafferre. The ‘Noles two leading scorers continued to put points on the board as Jorris scored 15 and Lafferre scored 14. Also hitting double digits was Kordell Antill with 10 points. Other scorers included Zack Jorris with six points and Chandler Kuhn with six points. Bryan Duffy and Seth Alleman rounded out the scoring with two points a piece.
The loss to Buckeye Trail put Monroe Central in the consolation round of the OVAC tournament to face the River Pilots, who were dominated by Magnolia in their first round match-up. In the fight for third place, River jumped out to a nine point first quarter lead and led at half-time by a score of 37-29. The Seminoles never really got close and fell by a large margin of 73-49.
