While the phase three budget cuts were the biggest news of the Feb. 21 Switzerland of Ohio Local School District Board of Education meeting, other business did take place during the meeting.
After weeks of negotiations, the school board passed a motion to sign a mineral rights lease agreement with Eclipse Resources. The lease agreement concerns nearly 80 acres surrounding Swiss Hills Career Center. The district inked for a sign-on bonus of $5,500 per acre bringing the total check for the district to almost $440,000.
The efforts were spear-headed by school board president Ron Winkler. Winkler said the district had previously been in negotiations with Consol Energy. However, according to Winkler, the terms were not as favorable. Also, the district got the main contract condition they sought in the deal with Eclipse Resources: no surface drilling on school property.
In efforts to ease the financial burden on the district, also passed were several motions by the board to renegotiate contracts. The district will seek to re-enter contract negotiations with the Washington County Board of Developmental Disabilities, the Belmont County Board of Developmental Disabilities, the Monroe County Board of Developmental Disabilities, the Ohio Valley Educational Service Center, and Ohio Mid-Eastern Regional Education Services Agency.
