Boys Basketball: The Beallsville Blue Devil boys basketball team will start their second season in a row with a new coach. After long-time Head Coach Lou Tolzda departed for Monroe Central in 2012, he was replaced by Casey Tolzda. Tolzda was named Powhatan Elementary principal earlier this year, so he relinquished the position. This year, replacing Tolzda will be Head Coach Jordan Stephens, who was the Junior Varsity coach last year and a varsity assistant.
The Blue Devils will begin their first year with Stephens at the helm after an 11-12 record last year. The team will set off to improve on that record with the loss of 1,000 point scorer Teryn Jarrett. “When you lose that type of scoring, you have to ask kids to step up,” said Stephens.
Some of those expected to step up will the returning letter winners including seniors Logan Nippert and Dalton Secrest, junior Tristan Palmer and sophomore Chase Mercer. “Those guys all bring unique skills to the table,” said Stephens.
Stephens had high praises for seniors Secrest and Nippert. “Secrest is an athletic big at 6’2”. We’re looking for him to step up and be a force in the paint,” said Stephens.
Stephens described about Nippert, “He’s a quick guard. He should be the primary ball handler.”
The team’s returning high scorer will be Tristan Palmer. Also expected to contribute will be Mikey Palmer, Chad Louden, and Cole Susac. “Those three guys will compete for some varsity time,” said Stephens.
Stephens noted there will be challenges as the players adapt to their new roles. “We have some guys with experience, but we’re not a veteran team. A lot of these guys have played one year of varsity or less,” said Stephens.
However, Stephens believes the Blue Devils can handle the team’s game plan, which includes pressure defense, pushing the ball up court and forcing turnovers. “I’d like to think we’ll be an up-tempo team. We have a lot of quick guards,” Stephens said.
Stephens added, “I’m excited to be the head coach and to be with this team.”
Girls Basketball: The Beallsville Lady Blue Devils will also find themselves under new leadership this year. Taking over the reigns will be Ty English, who has been an assistant the past three years. English will look to lead the Lady Blue Devils to a better record than last year’s 6-17.
The team will be led by four letter winners, including Lane Bedford, the team’s only senior. Juniors Dicey Stewart, Randi Ring, and Morgan Myers also are returning letter winners.
