Well, May is almost over; graduations have begun. We have a few seniors graduating in our area, Stephanie Murdock, Emily Dierkes, Marty Wolfe and Jacob Haney. Congratulations to all and best wishes in your future.

The River softball team has had a great year. They won sectional tournament in Shadyside, a 20 and 10 season, 2nd in PVC. Hayle Bowers was 1st Team All State, with 62 RBI, Gabby Gaudy was 1st Team All District. Monica Curtis and Renae Riley were 2nd Team All District. Four senior girls will be leaving, Anna Rufener, Renae Riley, Stephanie Murdock and Lindsey Goddard. Good luck, girls, in the future and thanks to the coaches for all their work.

My news reporter friend Tabitha Straub of the Hilltop 4-H Club said they have had two great fundraisers. They sold pizzas and had a bake sale at Tractor Supply. Broc Miracle brought in Karen Romick to talk about family history. She did a great job. “Thanks for coming in, Family History is Broc’s 4-H project.” Club members are doing demonstrations on their projects and some bring in live animals. What fun!

Boy have we been blessed with some nice weather. A little too hot at times. My brother-in-law, Todd, said he’s waiting for the shoe to fall, meaning Mother Nature still has something for those eager gardeners.

Emily Grove and David McIntire were married on April 14 in Fiesta Key, Fla. Those attending were Walter and Judy McIntire, Lydia McIntire, Rebecca and John Milosavljevic and Lois Luikart. The couple will be living near Pittsburgh. David is the son of our former mail carrier, Judy McIntire. Judy retired earlier this year. Hope you are enjoying your retirement.

Happy belated birthday to former Monroe County resident Freda Schafer. She still gets the Beacon to keep up with all of her family and friends.

Well the good Lord sure has been blessing us with a lot of nice weather this spring. Sure is hard to get the little ones to come in at night and do homework and get ready for bed.

Julia Schwartz of Warren, N.J. was visiting Allison Blake and her family over the Easter holiday. I know Julia had a nice dinner; Allison’s Mom Jennie and her grandmother Alice Mae are good country cooks, homemade the way it should be.

Joe and Susan Hupp and their three children were visiting Susan’s parents, Bob and Carolyn Winkler for Easter. Bob and Carolyn enjoy  having their grandkids stop by and enjoy the country.

Max and Margaret Clegg are back home from a two-week vacation. They visited their son Jeff and his wife, Kathy in Minneapolis, Minn. for Easter. Then onto Indiana to visit their daughter Marsha, her husband Al and two grandsons. They had a very nice vacation, but are happy to be home.

Well, the weather is still unseasonably warm. Everything is blooming and leaves are coming out and people are getting their gardens ready. I hope we don’t get that last snowstorm or hard frost that could do in all the hard work we’ve done so far.

The Hilltop 4-H Club has started its year. Their officers are Tyler Stewart, president; Megan Schumacher, vice-president; Madison Huffman, secretary; Nerissa Smith, treasurer; Tabitha Straub, news reporter; Thad Indermuhle, health and safety; Hannah Straub, recreation; and Denise Heath, scrapbook. Their fundraisers will be selling Little Ceasars pizza kits and a bake sale. They will also be collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald and planting flowers in the county.

Andy and Jennifer Stirm are the parents of a baby girl born March 29. She was welcomed home by a sister and brother. The proud grandparents are Bob and Carolyn Winkler and Ruth Stirm and the late Arthur Stirm.

Tom and Alberta Winkler went to the Jr. River Spring Concert for the band. Those from the fifth grade are Kylie Cross, Thad Indermuhle, Riley Lollathin, Hannah Straub, Tabitha Straub, Kaley Vankirk, Sierra Knowlton and Matthew Lancaster. They are directed by Holly McCormack.

Well we went from winter right into summer. It seems nice if the rain would go away. I hope we have a little spring and not rush into hot weather.

Don’t forget it’s time to join 4-H. There’s something for everyone; call the Extension Office at 472-0810 for a club near you.

Ethel Hunnel Walton is now in the Monroe County Care Center. She would love to hear from her old friends. So stop in and see her.

Tom and Alberta Winkler visited Carl Smith of Seville recently.

The fifth grade River girls basketball season has ended with a tournament victory at Buckeye Local. Great season, girls!
