There couldn’t have been better weather for the 2015 Monroe County Fair. Sunny, temperate days and cool nights were a welcome sight for the large part of the county’s citizens taking part in festivities.

An interesting WWII memorial passed through Monroe County on Monday, Aug. 31 in the form of the USS LST Ship Memorial. The ship, normally located in Evansville, IN, made a rare trip to Pittsburgh, PA, departing on Aug. 27. The ship will be open for tours in Pittsburgh at the North Shore Riverfront Park from Sept.

Three generations of the Dannemiller family, descendants of John and Catherine Winland, were recognized at the Monroe County Fair on Thurs., Aug. 27 as their family farm was designated an Ohio Bicentennial Farm.

Buckeye Kids 4-H donated blankets

The Buckeye Kids 4-H Club donated 20 fleece blankets to the Arbors of Woodsfield. The blankets will be used as Bingo prizes for the residents. River Sports 9/3/15

The football team took its season opener against Eastern High School as a whopping 60-6 victory. Lukas Isaly, Parker Caretti, and Joey Flannery had outstanding performances in the game.

Beallsville Sports 9/3/15

The Beallsville Blue Devils football team kicked off its season on the road against Hardin Northern’s varsity squad on August 28. Facing a stellar offense, the Blue Devils fell behind early. On the back of four long touchdown runs, including runs of 64 yards and 47 yards, Hardin Northern went ahead 27-0 after the first quarter.

French cousins visit Monroe County

Recently, Olivier Weissend, his wife Carole and little daughter, Mila of Bliesbruck, France visited in Monroe County.  In 1997, Olivier became interested in genealogy and located three ancestors, all brothers, Jacques, Jean Louis and Servais Weissent. They were the sons of Jean (John) Weissent and Appolonia Hochreiner of Lorraine. France. 

Kiwanis Coats for Kids program announces BBQ for Sept. 11

The Kiwanis Club of Woodsfield is pleased to announce that, in partnership with Riesbeck’s, it will be coordinating the annual barbecue event on Friday, Sept. 11 to fund coats for kids. The Kiwanis Coats for Kids program, which has officially absorbed and replaced Warm the Children, will provide warm winter clothing for local children of families in need.

  Laings - The area’s hope for a state winner to the 1955 Soil Conservation Essay Contest rests on the shoulders of 17-year-old Darlene Workman. Miss Workman will be at the Ohio State Fair to receive a bronze engraved plaque for her regional winning essay, “There is a Brighter Day”.
