Monroe Central Head Football Coach Jay Circosta received the 2013 Ohio Coaches Achievement Award from the Minor Pro Football Hall of Fame. The presentation was made by Mr. Don donatelli, a member of the Minor Pro Football Hall of Fame. The award was presented at a ceremony held at The Heinz Hall History Center and Sports Museum in Pittsburgh on May 4. Coach Circosta is pictured (left) with Donatelli.

The Monroe Central Lady Seminoles softball team fell to PVC powerhouse Fort Frye at home on May 6 by a final of 7-0. The Seminoles fell behind early at 3-0 after two innings and never competed in the shut-out loss. Monroe Central had three hits on the day.
In baseball action, on May 8, Monroe Central's hot streak ended against a strong Buckeye Trail squad. Monroe Central fell by a final of 11-5. The game was tied at 5-5 after three innings. However, Buckeye Trail used a one run top of the fifth and a five run top of the sixth to cruise to victory.
Jacob Black led the Seminoles with a three run home run. Seth Alleman added two RBIs.
The baseball squad opened up tournament play at Cambridge on May 11 against two seed Martins Ferry. The Seminoles' victory took more than the usual seven innings as they needed nine innings to put away the Purple Riders. Monroe Central was to play St. Clairsville on May 15 in the second round.
The Monroe Central track squads competed in the competitive PVC track meet at Buckeye Trail on May 7. After the dust cleared, the girls finished sixth with 59 points while the boys finished seventh with 46 points.
Individuals excelling for the Monroe Central girls team were Laycie Ball, who finished fourth in the 800 meter run; Annie Digity, who finished second in the 100 meter hurdles, third in the 300 meter hurdles, and fourth in the high jump; and Elizabeth Robey, who finished third in the long jump and fourth in the 100 meter hurdles.
In the boys meet, Joey Schumacher finished fourth in the 800 meter run. The Monroe Central 4 X 400 relay team had a strong showing finishing second. Making up the relay team were Joey Schumacher, Aaron Sanger, Patrick Craig and Cordell Gauding. The 4 X 800 relay team finished third. Running in the event were Chandler Kuhn, Derek Weber, Joey Schumacher and Cordell Gauding.
The track squads next competed in the WesBanco Shamrock Relays at Barnesville on May 11. The girls squad finished 10th out of 12 teams while the boys finished 12th out of 12 against strong competition. The girl’s excelled in the Shuttles event, finishing first over second and third-place finishers St. Clairsville and Union Local. The boys' best event was the 4 X 800 relay where they finished fifth.

The track team participated in the Pioneer Valley Conference Championship at Buckeye Trail on May 7. The girls team won the conference. Cassidy McCullough won the 100m dash (12.8), 200m dash (26.2), long jump (15-08), and 300m hurdles (45.4). Abby Caldwell finished runner-up in the 100m dash (13.5), 200m dash (27.5) and 400m dash (1:02). Devyn Potts won the 100m hurdles (17.8) and finished 2nd in the 300m hurdles (50.6). In the 400m dash, Becka Stewart was runner-up (1:08). In the 800m run, Landyn Ramsay finished 2nd (2:42). In the 1600, Laken Ramsay finished 6th (6:23), while Myla Smith finished 7th (6:58). In the 3200, Makenna Collins placed 4th (14:25), while Smith placed 5th (14:54). The 4x100 team of Jessica Karpacs, Courtney Imhoff, Tiffany Brown, and Kennedy Hutchinson placed 3rd (57.9). The 4x200 team of Karpacs, Imhoff, Brown and Caldwell finished 2nd (1:55). The team of Stewart, Landyn Ramsay, Karpacs and Potts won the 4x400 (4:32). The 4x800 team of Stewart, Landyn Ramsay, Collins and Laken Ramsay were runners-up (11:02). Imhoff was runner-up in the high jump (4-08). Kala Brown placed 4th in the shot put (28-08). The boys team finished 5th. Bryce Cross finished 5th in the 100m dash (12.4), and 3rd in the 200m dash (24.6). Joey Flannery placed 6th in the 400m dash (56.4). In the 3200, Daniel Fisher was 8th (12:58). Brandon Smith placed 6th in the 300m hurdles (48.6). The 4x100 team of Smith, Jordan Sapp, Bryce Cross and Brok Cross finished 4th (48.2). The 4x200 team of Flannery, Sapp, Bryce Cross and Brok Cross placed 3rd (1:40). The 4x400 team of Brandon Reusser, Brok Cross, CJ Honeycutt and Flannery finished 6th (4:08). The 4x800 team of Dakota Dunn, Freddie Mundt, Ryan Ludolph and Reusser placed 6th (10:26). Brok Cross was runner-up in the high jump (5-06). Mundt finished 8th in the long jump (16-03.25). Brett Rosen won the shot put (45-09), and Thomas Tharp was runner-up (38-11). Tharp won the discus (121-02).
On May 11, the track teams participated in the Shamrock Relays at Barnesville. The girls team finished 4th. Imhoff finished 5th in the 100m dash (14.6). Caldwell finished 3rd in the 200m dash (27.8). Karpacs placed 4th in the 400m dash (1:09). McCullough won the 300m hurdles (47.1), while Potts finished 3rd (51.7). The 4x100 team of Stewart, Landyn Ramsay, Collins and Laken Ramsay finished 5th (58.8). The 4x200 team of Caldwell, Potts, Brown and McCullough were runners-up (1:51). The 4x400 team of Stewart, Caldwell, Landyn Ramsay and Potts were runners-up (4:36). The 4x800 team of Stewart, Landyn Ramsay, Collins and Laken Ramsay placed 3rd (11:14). Imhoff placed 5th in the high jump (4-08). McCullough won the long jump (16-04.5), while Karpacs placed 6th (14-01). The boys finished 8th. Bryce Cross placed 4th in the 200m dash (25.0). The 4x200 team of Flannery, Sapp, Cross and Cross finished 4th (1:40). The 4x110 shuttle hurdles team of Dunn, Brok Cross, Smith and Reusser placed 5th (1;13). Brok Cross was 3rd in the high jump (5-06). In the shot put, Tharp placed 4th (36-07), and Rosen finished 5th (36-01). Tharp was runner-up in the discus (128-07).
All of this week’s baseball and softball games were canceled due to rain.

The Monroe Central Lady Seminoles softball team continued its hard luck season with a loss against St. John on Mon., April 29. St. John were the recently crowned OVAC champs coming into the game, and they showed Monroe Central no mercy. The final score came to 10-0 with the Seminoles gaining only two hits.
The softball team was back in action on May 2 against in-county rival River. Although River entered the game with a 16-8 record compared to Monroe Central’s 5-13 record, the Lady Noles almost pulled out the upset.
Monroe Central had a 2-1 lead through three innings. However, River scored two in the fourth to bring the score to what would be the final of 3-2. Monroe Central was led by Chelsie Roberts who had a homerun and two RBIs.
The Monroe Central baseball team had a very different week. They began the week 9-9 but won every game this week to bring their season record to 14-9.
The Seminoles’ week began on April 29 at PVC rival Frontier. Behind a strong pitching performance from Dylan Hamilton, who allowed only two hits in a 5-1 victory. Monroe Central was led in victory by Seth Alleman who had a triple and an RBI. Jacob Black also scored two runs in the victory.
Monroe Central received another stellar pitching performance on April 30 from Kordell Antill at home against Shenandoah. Antill pitched a complete game, one hit shut-out to lead the Seminoles to a 2-0 victory. The Seminoles played small ball in the victory with their only two runs coming from an Antill RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Seth Alleman.
