LARRY BURKHART

Larry Lynn Burkhart, 83, of Sycamore Valley, OH, went home to the Lord at 10:15am on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, after a brief hospitalization. He was born on March 15, 1942, in Calais, OH to William Adam and Esta Marie (Christman) Burkhart.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Wanda Lee (Miller) Burkhart; his children, Regina Lynn Burkhart of Belpre, Carla Mae (Stuward) Phillips of Columbus, Darin Lee (Sarah) Burkhart of Lewisville, and Douglas Adam (Danetta) Burkhart of Lewisville; his grandchildren, Wendy Alison Phillips of Phoenix, AZ, Carson Tecumseh Phillips of Philadelphia, PA, Cierra Riann Burkhart of Lewisville, Hayley McKenna Phillips of Columbus, Emily Morrison (Wesley Dick) of Lewisville, and Hunter Knowlton (Brooklyn Michael) of Graysville; his siblings, John Edward Burkhart of Lewisville and Donald Eugene (Lanie) Burkhart of Caldwell; his great grandchildren, Hensley Mae and Riley Ann Dick; and several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Carolyn Marie, his brother Robert Neil, his sister-in-law Nira (Robert’s wife), with whom he shared a love of Cleveland baseball, and his sister-in-law Nancy (John’s wife).
As a young lad, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers and neighbors from the Curtis and Day families. He never tired of sharing stories of their adventures. He could always be singled out in this group as the boy who never went anywhere without a book. He loved learning and school, becoming the first ever student body president of Skyvue High School. His avid reading habit spanned throughout his entire life, and he often completed a paper grocery sack full of books each week. He read so many books from the local library that he was asked to put his initials in each book he finished so that the librarians could select books for him that he had not read.
Larry was employed as a finisher in the Consolidated Aluminum/Ormet rolling mill in Hannibal, OH, most of his career, but also worked in his young adult life as a silo builder and in his later life as a gentlemen farmer, which he began with four cows named by his wife and kids (Bessie, Bossy, Freida, and Sheila). Though working full time, he thought it was important to be involved in the community. He helped begin the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department and served as their chief for a number of years. He was also a member of the Stafford Masonic Lodge and the Lebanon Methodist Church.
As author William Cullen Bryant wrote over a century ago, Larry does not go to his eternal resting-place alone. He couldn’t wish for a “couch more magnificent.” He is lying down with “patriarchs of the infant worldwith kings, the powerful of the earththe wise, the good, fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past, all in one mighty sepulcher” that is in the promised, mysterious realm of perfect happiness where God the Father resides.
Family and friends will be received at the Bethel Community Center, 36877 State Route 260, Lewisville, OH 43754 on Saturday, May 31st from 1pm until a Memorial Service begins at 2pm with Erin Curtis officiating. After the service, there will be a meal and fellowship. Burial will be held on a later date at the Creighton Ridge Cemetery. Any donations made will be graciously accepted by the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Ohio.
