75 Years Ago (1949)

A savage gray fox, apparently affected by the rabies, attacked two small children near their home at Kerr Station, west of town, Friday evening, inflicting severe injuries. The victims were Helen Brown, 7, and Glenn Brown, 5.

The famous Sunshine Boys from radio station WWVA will be at the Beallsville Methodist Church for an evening concert on Sunday, January 15 at 8:00 p.m.

On Thursday evening, the Public Speaking class of the Sardis High School will present a group of one-act plays at the high school auditorium at 8:00 o’clock. Following the plays, food will be sold by the Band Mothers.

For the first time in several years, no school credit is given to the nearly 60 members of the Woodsfield High School Band. It has been necessary to conduct rehearsals, which are held regularly, outside of school hours.

On New Year’s Day during the afternoon, Mrs. S. V. Steward invited a number of friends for a party at her home on South Sycamore street. Out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Lester Fraley, Colonel and Mrs. W. H. Steward, of Jerusalem; Capt. And Mrs. Goodman, of Camp Lee, Virginia.

Edward A. Johnson, age 70, died suddenly while hunting Saturday night near Richfork, having suffered a heart attack. A life-long resident of Monroe County, Mr. Johnson was a furniture dealer in Woodsfield for several years and owned and operated the Hilltop Grocery and Filling Station.

On Monday, Jan. 9, George Lumbatis, of Lewisville, driller for Lucas & Thornberry, lost the little finger on his left hand. It was caught in a sand lien loop when Mr. Lumbatis was running the bailer and was severed completely near the hand before he realized what had happened.

65 Years Ago (1959)

Raymond Jones was re-elected chief of the Woodsfield Volunteer Fire Department at its annual dinner on Thursday evening. The need for a new building to house fire fighting equipment was discussed by John Cramblett and a committee was named to look into ways of financing such a project.

Capt. T.J. Reynolds, who for 45 years piloted showboats up and down the Ohio River and its tributaries, is dead. He fell overboard Wednesday night from the showboat “Majestic” and drowned in the Kanawha River near here. Police said he had been working on the boat alone, and that there was no sign of foul play.

Woodsfield Junior Chamber of Commerce Second Vice President Carl Finder sold a fire extinguisher to Harry Elliott. The Jaycees sponsored the sale Saturday, with proceeds being used to support future Jaycee projects.

Football practice will get off to an earlier start for Ohio high school teams next year. Ohio High school officials voted 575 to 25 in favor of a proposal to start the season the third Friday in August. Previously, teams could not begin formal practice until Aug. 20.

55 Years Ago (1969)

Miss Terry Decker, newest member of the White House staff, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burris Decker, 103 Maple Ave., Woodsfield, was seen on national television Friday evening as she and another member of the White House staff presented President Nixon with his birthday present from the staff.

John S. Tuel, of Sardis, Route 1, will celebrate his 95th birthday on Thursday, Jan. 22. Mr. Tuel has enjoyed good health until recently. He has lived alone since the death of his wife three years ago and has done all the household chores and gardening. He would appreciate a visit or card from his friends, relatives and neighbors.

The Monroe Arts and Crafts Guild announced its winter and spring workshop schedule. The first meeting will feature Mrs. J.W. Blevins on Jan. 13.

Mrs. Roger (Lucella) Loy was honored during a going away party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Shook, at Antioch. Mrs. Loy left Kennedy Airport, Jan. 10, to join her husband, SP/4 Roger P. Loy, in Frankfurt, Germany, where he has been stationed for five months, serving in the Third Infantry Division.

Alpha Omicron Chapter of Lambda Kappa Sigma, National Pharmaceutical Fraternity for Women, announces the pledging of Mrs. Dianne Ault Palmer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ault, of Liberty Avenue, Woodsfield. Mrs. Palmer is a student in her first professional year at the WVU School of Pharmacy.

Unbeaten and state-ranked Skyvue registered its 11th victory of the campaign at Stafford, as the powerhouse Golden Hawks, downed county rival Beallsville 78-67. Skyvue veterans Eric Heft led all scorers with 27 points.

New Matamoras – Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Rinard were pleasantly surprised on Christmas Day when their son, Sgt. Rusty Rinard, and his wife, Gloria, called them from Germany, where Sgt. Rinard has been stationed for the past year.
