Engineer pushes to re-establish planning commission

Monroe County Engineer Amy Zwick hopes to re-establish a county body that has been “defunct” for years.Zwick spoke with the Monroe County Commissioners during their regular meeting Monday, July 29 about bringing back the county’s planning commission.A planning commission is a public advisory board that offers recommendations on land development and other planning proposals, such as zoning and the creating of subdivisions.

It isn’t hard to find someone in the northern part of Monroe County wearing blue.That isn’t just during the school year – that’s 365 days a year.It’s Beallsville blue, Blue Devil blue.It’s pride in a community, a home.This eternally-blue-clad village has a lot of pride – and a lot of history.That history will be celebrated this weekend as Beallsville and Monroe County celebrates its bicentennial with Beallsville 200 Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28.The event will feature as Mayor Jon Gramlich put it, “a weekend filled with festivities” to celebrate Beallsville’s 200 years.Washington Street will be the bicentennial hub throughout the weekend, with a majority of the events based in and around that area.The weekend will start with an opening ceremony at 4 p.m.

County Democrats welcome Kripchak

Democratic candidate for Ohio’s Sixth District Congressional seat Michael Kripchak visited Monroe County for a conversation with voters Monday, July 22 at the Midway Community Center.Kripchak, who will face Republican Michael Rulli for the second time in the November General Election, was in Monroe County for a low-key meet and greet and ice cream social hosted by the Monroe County Democratic Party Executive Committee.During a brief speech between one-on-one conversations with visitors, Kripchak said he hoped to find out what they feel are the major issues they face on a day-to-day basis.Kripchak, a former U.S.

Funding runs out for mobility program

The money is running out but the need is still there.That’s the position of Buckeye Hills Regional Council when it comes to its mobility program.Kelly Isaly, Monroe County Mobility Manager, and Melissa Zoller, Buckeye Hills Planning Director, met with the Monroe County Commissioners to discuss the program during their regular meeting Monday, July 22.According to information provided by Isaly and Zoller, the program showed “the need for additional transportation” in the county.They cited 132 rides that were provided by non-emergency medical funding in and outside of the county through June.
