Anonymous donor pays off senior lunch balance

An anonymous donor took steps to make sure every senior in the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District would be able to receive a diploma.The SOLSD Board of Education approved the donation of $3,095.25 that covered all the balances left on lunch accounts by seniors in the district during its regular meeting Wednesday, April 8 at Swiss Hills Career Center.Board Member Ken Phillips made a point to mention the donation, expressing his appreciation for the random act of generosity.“It happened this afternoon,” District Superintendent Phil Ackerman said.

Harper resigns from Woodsfield Council

Woodsfield Village Council will look to fill a vacancy as Council member Leanne Harper submitted her resignation prior to council’s regular meeting Monday, May 6.Mayor Carol Hehr read a brief resignation letter written by Harper before council accepted her resignation.Harper joined council in August of 2022, being appointed to replace Jamie Hill, who had previously resigned.Village Administrator Kevin Brooks thanked Harper for her service on council, saying she was a “dynamic council member” and that her efforts were appreciated.Council planned to post a notice seeking a replacement in the upcoming weeks.Also during the May 6 council meeting, Council member Tiffany Ramsay announced a pair of successful events held by the village’s Community Strong Committee.The committee held its first Music in the Park event Friday, May 3, with several dozen people in attendance.Ramsay was encouraged by the attendance, especially considering rain threatened during the event.Future Music in the Park events will be held on the first Friday of each summer month at City Park in Woodsfield.The Community Strong Committee also held its Spring Fling event Saturday, April 27, with 29 cars participating in the cruise-in.Hehr announced an event planned for July 3 in coordination with annual fireworks.She hoped to organize a parade “just for kids” during the event, where children would march around the park on foot or on their bicycles.Brooks gave an update on what he felt was a successful first week of community cleanup efforts.Dumpsters were heavily utilized when they were placed at the parking lot by the Monroe Central Football field on Eastern Avenue.“They were all filled repeatedly,” Brooks said, “and emptied three times.”The second clean-up event will be held the week of June 3 with the dumpsters located in the lot next to the village’s administration building.The dumpsters may be used by village residents only.The village also offers assistance for village residents wishing to improve their homes or businesses.The village has funding available to assist in sidewalk and facade improvements.
