The spring brought relaxing days to the Action News Team, which was fine by them.After almost solving the mystery of the random rock and nearly coming up with a story interesting enough to calm livestock, the Action News Team deserved a break.But emergencies don’t always have a convenient timetable, something the Action News Team recently found out.They had just been on another nice stroll to the coffee shop and were returning to the office to procrastinate when an important alert came across the radio.“We interrupt this program to bring to you this bulletin,” an old-timey radio newscaster said.

A way to start talking about mental health

It can often be difficult to think of where to start when addressing mental health issues.Statistics provided by the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Belmont, Harrison and Monroe Counties suggest that one in five adults experiences a mental health condition each year, while everyone faces challenges that can impact mental health.For Monroe County, maybe the best way to start is simply addressing the fact that it exists.The Monroe County Commissioners started the conversation during their regular meeting Monday, April 29 when they welcomed Mental Health and Recovery Board Executive Director Lisa Ward and issued a proclamation declaring May as Mental Health Month.Ward appreciated the opportunity to not just raise awareness, but to also let people know what resources are available to them.Whether it was for a friend or family member - or even yourself - Ward felt it was important to know how to access mental health resources.Ward felt improvements have been made when it comes to increasing resources in Monroe County over the past few years.She highlighted the Crisis Coalition, which meets every other month, and mental health resources that are now available at the Monroe County Jail.Ward credited Monroe County Chief Probation Officer Matt Vinskovich, who she referred to as the county’s “mental health champion” for his efforts in getting resources to those in need at the jail.Ward also mentioned events that are coming later this month, including a Mental Health Fair that will be held from noon to 4 p.m.
