The days of young men and women sitting in the grass, walking the halls and learning at the old Woodsfield High School are long gone. For years, all that has remained is a decaying building. The building that was so special to so many in this community could soon have its chance to rest as Monroe County took possession of the property on South Paul Street in Woodsfield. The property had been vacant for almost four years after two drug raids at the location in January of 2020.Despite the fact that the school’s owner was facing a lengthy prison sentence, the building’s status remained in litigation. And it fell into even more disrepair. The county hopes to see the building razed in the near future and is working with the Monroe County Land Bank to make it happen. The Monroe County Commissioners said the demolition would be part of the new round of funding through the Land Bank.If leveled, the county would maintain control of the site.In the meantime, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office took action to make sure the community remained safe in light of the building’s condition.Monroe County Sheriff Charles Black announced that the county had taken possession on Wednesday, March 6.“It was brought to our attention that the building was unsecure and numerous individuals have entered the structure,” Black said in a Facebook post.
