Monroe Central picked up a win over its county rival River last week.The Seminoles got a late run to win 7-6 Wednesday, May 1 at Woodsfield.Caleb Griffith started on the mound for Monroe Central, while Lucas Dennis was the starting pitcher for River.Both teams found out their tournament trail last week as the Eastern District held its baseball sectional draw.River was given the highest seed among area teams in Division IV, grabbing the No.

Pilots qualify for OVAC tourney

River earned a spot in the OVAC Class 2A semifinal with a pair of wins last week.The Pilots started with a 14-1, five-inning win over Magnolia Tuesday, April 23 at Hannibal.River blasted nine hits in the win, which was highlighted by a 12-run fourth inning.Kaden Hunt had four singles and four RBIs.

MC, River girls in action at Bellaire

The girls’ teams from Monroe Central and River were in action for the Dave Ice Girls Invitational Thursday, April 25 at Bellaire.For Monroe Central Mayzie Emery and Bayleigh Burdette had solid outings.Emery finished third in the 200 and took fourth in the 100.Burdette took fifth in the long jump, sixth in the 400 and eighth in the 100.For River, Mallory Brake fifth in the 300 hurdles, Macy Isaly sixth in the 100 hurdles and seventh in the 300 hurdles and Brooke Huffman eighth in the 100 hurdles.In relays, River was third in the shuttle hurdle relay, sixth in the 800 relay and seventh in the 400 relay.Monroe Central also competed in the third Ohio Valley Track League Meet Tuesday, April 23 at Shadyside High School.Emery took second in the 100 and 200 and Burdette was second in the 400 and long jump.Tyler Whitacre was second in the high jump and third in the 400, Samuel Comstock second in the shot and third in the discus, Davon Bourne third in the 200, Kiernan Bates third in the 1600 and William Travis fourth in the 400In relays, the Seminoles were third in the 4 x 400.

Monroe Central wins four for the week

Monroe Central won four games on the week.The Seminoles defeated Bellaire 6-5 Tuesday, April 16 at Woodsfield.Kazziah Cecil was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and walking two.She limited Bellaire to six hits in the game.Monroe Central built a quick lead, scoring three in the bottom of the first, but Bellaire charged back late in the game.
