Seminoles left with unfinished business

Tucker Howell and Chance Allen could only watch the last few seconds tick away. They sat on the bench with their heads down, taking in the final moments of their season Friday, March 8 at Union Local High School. There had obviously been bright spots throughout the Seminoles’ season – more than 20 wins, a first-ever OVAC title and the first trip to the district final in school history. But at that moment, Howell and Allen were left with the one goal they weren’t able to accomplish – winning a district title.Despite their best efforts, the Seminoles were unable to get past perennial district champion Berlin Hiland in a 54-43 loss in the Division IV district final. The game started getting away from Monroe Central early.Hiland, as balanced and consistent as they come, found ways to attack Monroe Central off the dribble and from outside. The dual threat was enough to give the Hawks a quick 9-2 lead just minutes into the game. The Seminoles (23-2) responded, outscoring the Hawks 7-5 to finish the quarter only down 14-9, but that initial deficit tended to dog Monroe Central the rest of the way.A combination of struggling to stick with Hiland’s scorers on defense and finding space on offense haunted Monroe Central in the second quarter, as the Hawks extended their lead.
