New group established to hold animal sale

One week ago, 4-H participants were unsure of what they would be able to do with their animal projects for the canceled Monroe County Fair.

A new group stepped up to make sure a sale would be held.

According to the group’s Facebook page, Monroe County For Kids was created to hold a small and large animal sale for Monroe County’s 4-H and FFA exhibitors.

The sale will be held starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27 at Grizzle Ridge Arena in Jerusalem.

Monroe County For Kids is accepting registration forms through its Facebook Page through Monday, Aug. 10. Forms can also be emailed to MonroeCountyForKids@gmail.com.

Each participant will be permitted two trips through the sale ring.

Small animals will start the sale in the following order, rabbits, chickens, ducks, turkeys, lambs and goats. Large animals will follow in the order of feeder calf heifers, dairy beef feeders, market steers, feeder calf steers and hogs.

Participant order will be random, as no show is connected to the sale.

There will be no weigh-ins, with animals being sold by head or by pen.

Monroe County Four Kids recommends exhibitors treat the sale much as they would the regular Junior Fair Livestock Sale, dressing appropriately in jeans and a tucked-in shirt and grooming their animals prior to the sale.

Grooming will be different this year, as there are no wash racks available at Grizzle Ridge Arena.

In addition to cleaning their animals and dressing appropriately, exhibitors are recommended to contact potential buyers, much like they would for the Junior Fair Livestock Show.

The auction will be a live auction, with buyers and exhibitors at the same location.

Monroe County For Kids is still finalizing details of the sale, which it anticipates release in the upcoming weeks.

Buyers will be presented with a placard, on it being a place for a picture of the exhibitor and his or her animal.

After the sale, animals for resale will go to Barnesville Livestock, and animals to be processed will be transported to local processors, who have agreed to pick up the animals unless the buyers have made their own arrangements.

More details regarding the sale will be made available at Monroe County For Kids on Facebook.
