Service for Donald “Gus” Harmon, 68, of Tyler, Texas, was held Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, with Pastor Kendall Banks officiating. A private family burial followed at Rose Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.
Gus passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023, in Bullard, Texas.
Gus was born Aug. 8, 1955, in Knoxville, Tennessee to Don and Joann Harmon. He grew up in Woodsfield, playing multiple sports. Specifically excelling in baseball, which earned him “All Ohio Catcher” in 1973.
Gus graduated from Cleveland State, Tennessee, Carson-Newman, Tennessee, and Delta State University, Mississippi, with a Master Degree in Education. He played and coached at all three schools. Gus was a teacher and a coach in Florida, and the majority of his career in Texas that included Robert E. Lee Tyler, Hemphill, Gladewater, Pine Tree and Grace.
Gus was involved with USA Baseball, a member of American Baseball Coaches Association for 44 years.
Gus also was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church, Tyler, Texas.
Gus was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Joann Harmon; and sister, Vicki Harmon.
He is survived by his loving family including wife, Denise, of 44 years; daughter, Sarah (Scott Birch); son, Tyler (Brittany); sister, Ann (Buck) Chewning; niece, Leslie Chewning; and granddaughters, Bridgett and Tinley Harmon.
Gus was very passionate about many things but on the top of the list was baseball, cheering along the University of Tennessee Volunteers, classic rock music and most importantly his love for his family.
Pallbearers were David DuPont, Cary Medlock, David Hickenbottom, Roy Newsome, Jarrod Bitter, Jason Holcomb, Lane Collier and Joey Braly. Honorary Pallbearer is Rick Hickenbottom.
Visitation was Friday, Oct. 13, 2023, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Hwy, Tyler, Texas.
