New Monroe County Treasurer Taylor Abbott isn’t long on the job, but he’s already looking to make an impact.

One of Abbott’s first goals is to address the large amounts of unpaid property taxes owed to the county.

Two families’ ‘Gift from God’

Aug. 14, 2006, was one of the hardest days in the life of Donna Harper.

On that day, Harper’s son Matthew Boylen was returning home from work when a tire blew, causing what would end up being a fatal accident.

Two days later, Harper had to say goodbye to her 22-year-old son.

Harper has the solace of remembering Matthew as he was.

A bigger way to help out

Thursday, Aug. 24 was just like any other day for Shirley Brown.

Shirley sat in her office preparing gas cards for people in need.

Then she started getting texts from Shaun Steed.

Shaun is no stranger to Shirley. He helps out with Shirley’s non-profit organization, Cancer Gas Cards Inc., calling bingo games and helping out with different functions.

One hour to change the future

Tony Bylsma doesn’t want to see any of the students he talked to last week take the same road he did.

Bylsma, a drug educator for Narconon, has spent the last 17-plus years helping young people throughout the country learn about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

He knows those dangers first hand, because he was once an addict.

Beallsville tops Valley

Beallsville picked up a victory over Valley 25-14, 25-15, 25-16 Thursday, Sept. 21 at Beallsville High School.

Rachel Campbell had 12 points, 11 assists and three kills for the Lady Blue Devils.

Also for Beallsville, Ashlie Louden had six assists, four points and three kills and Dagan Hossman seven points, five kills and four aces.

Golf Roundup - 9-28-17

River and Monroe Central were in action Thursday, Sept. 21 at the par-71 Crispin Golf Course.

The Pilots finished with a combined score of 384.

Logan Alleman had the best finish for River, shooting an 11-over-par 82.

Also for River, Ridge Thompson finished at 90, James Hendershot 103, Daniel Swegard 107 and Wes Hill 147.
