Local children take a walk along the custom pavers Saturday, Aug. 11 at the playground by the Sardis Community Center. The pavers were painted by local children before being placed at the playground.

For the past 10 months, the community of Sardis has come together with one common goal – to breathe new life into the playground at the old Sardis school.

It started in October with new equipment.

Five lucky kids, four Oompa-Loompas and one Willy Wonka greeted the crowd Friday, Aug. 10 and Saturday, Aug. 11 as the community production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” was held at the Henry Coulson Building at the Monroe County Fairgrounds.

~ M. Louise Decker Gadea ~

M. Louise Decker Gadea, 98, passed away peacefully on Aug. 4, 2018, in Princeton, New Jersey, an area in which she had lived for the past 50 years.

She was born in Woodsfield, a small town that she cherished, on June 15, 1920. She was the third of four children born to Royal Burris and Louise Okey Decker.

Lois Jean Mugrage, age 88, of Woodsfield, formerly of Racine, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018, at Wheeling Hospital Wheeling, West Virginia.  

She was born in Reedsville, Dec. 24, 1929, a daughter of the late John Ervin Barnhart and Anna Matilde Buetler Barnhart.  

~ Ronald J. Huff ~

Ronald J. Huff, age 74 of New Matamoras, passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at his home doing what he loved on his farm. 

He was born in Hinckley, Feb. 26, 1944, a son of the late Clarence Huff and Betty Zenk Huff.

Gulfport Energy Fund opens second grant round of 2018

The Gulfport Energy Fund at the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) is pleased to announce its second grant round of 2018 is now open. Applications are now available and will close on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. This year’s second grant round will support organizations and projects focused on health and human services and environmental stewardship.
