Gladys M. (Mallett) Cunningham, 88, of Sardis, Ohio, and Fort Myers Beach, Fla., beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend passed away on August 23, 2025. She was born to the late Urban James and Susan Jane (Billman) Mallett on December 22, 1936, in rural Monroe County, Ohio. She graduated from Sardis High School in Monroe County and married Marlyn R. Cunningham on May 8, 1955. Gladys worked in Monroe County and spent many years working at home to raise two children. In 1975, she started work at the U.S. Postal Service in Sardis until she retired in 1996. Gladys was a member of the Sardis United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star #533 (Clarington, Ohio), Ladies’ Oriental Shrine of North America and Women of Bayside Estates (Florida). She had a lifetime love of Fort Myers Beach where she and Marlyn spent more than 20 winters. She was an accomplished artist with Bunka Embroidery and completed more than 100 original pieces of art.
In addition to her parents, Gladys was preceded in death by her sisters Kathryn (Everett) Taylor, Lucille (Harry) Powers, Geneva (George) Powers, and her brothers Franklin (Lucy) Mallett, James (Elsie) Mallett and Harry (Marjorie) Mallett. Gladys is survived by her husband of 70 years, Marlyn, of Sardis, and Fort Myers Beach; children Danny (Jolinda) Cunningham and Brenda (Titus) Workman; grandchildren Brett (Natasha) Cunningham, Scott (Taraneh) Lucas, and Renee (David Bowman) Lucas; great-grandchildren Maya Lucas and Sophia Cunningham.
The family would like to thank Barrington Terrace of Fort Myers, Lee Health and Vitas for their care of Gladys.
