Exploring Your Heritage
Last month’s installment was about Thomas Williams, who was born in 1780 in Maryland. His death date is unknown, but he probably died in Monroe County. Fortunately, he left behind land deeds which help track his movements.
According to census records, Thomas was the father of at least 9 children. There is no will, estate, or other record that specifically identifies his children, but we can use circumstantial records to build a probable family.
The first possible son is Joseph Williams. In the 1840 census of Tyler County, a Joseph Williams is living next to Thomas and Jacob Williams. He may be the Joseph Williams living in Adams Township, Monroe County in the 1850 and 1860 census. His wife was Susan Jillet. (Jillet/Gillett is another name that is found in the Greene to Monroe County migration, which is the same route Thomas took.) Joseph and family moved to Indiana in a migration with other Monroe County families. He died in Bartholomew County, Indiana in 1897.
