Monroe Theatre News 5/10/18
The Midway Community Center’s Virginia Dillon room was transformed into a theater of sorts April 14 for the premiere of “The Under Pup,” first matinee shown at the Monroe Theatre on Dec. 2, 1939, featuring child star Gloria Jean. The special event organized by the Monroe Theatre Committee also was a celebration of Gloria Jean’s 92nd birthday; she later forwarded a picture of herself looking nowhere near 92 with her cake.
Freshly popped popcorn and a formally attired movie usher in red jacket, gloves and hat greeted movie goers. Admission prices were reminiscent of the 1930s and ‘40s, with adults paying 15 cents and children 10.
