Mildred “Millie” LaVera Smothers Mozena, of Woodsfield, OH passed away Friday January 17, 2025 at the Stellar Care Center. Millie was born on December 20, 1942 in Dubuque, Iowa to Oscar H. and Loretta C. Stecklein Smothers. After losing her mother at a young age, Millie was blessed to become the foster daughter of Edward and Fern Thompson of Darlington, WI. Lovingly, the Thompsons became her lifelong family, guiding and nurturing her when she needed it most.
Millie graduated from Darlington High School in 1961 and later from Madison Business College. Upon her college graduation, Millie moved to Woodsfield and became the legal secretary for Atty. Vince Ballard for several years. She eventually became an employee of the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District serving as the highly dedicated secretary at the Swiss Hills Career Center for many years. Millie was a dedicated, highly involved member of St. John’s U.C.C. in Powhatan Pt., OH. She also appreciated the warmth and love she received from St. Paul’s U.C.C. in Woodsfield, OH in her later years. Millie was a proud member of the Monroe Singers.
In addition to her birth and foster parents, Millie is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Victor “Snooks” Mozena, her son, Michael, her brother, Donald Smothers, her half-brother, Louis Smothers, and her foster brothers, Eugene Thompson and Leon Thompson.
Millie is survived by her daughter, Michelle Christman, grandchildren, Chloe, Samuel (Skyla), and Katie, and her great grandchildren, Kasen, Raelyn, Sydnee, Jackson, Kaleea, and Kamiya.
A private burial will be conducted at the convenience of her family.
A public memorial service will be held at 11:30 Saturday March 1st. at St. John’s UCC, Powhatan Pt, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s UCC, 51705 German Ridge Rd, Powhatan Pt, OH 43942.
