BCI & I investing officer-involved shooting

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Oct. 6 near Woodsfield.

According to a release from Monroe County Sheriff Charles Black, at approximately 9:27 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a structure fire on Holstein Road in Center Township.

Antioch Volunteer Fire Department, Monroe County EMS Squad 4 and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call approximately 10 minutes later.

Deputies observed that the building did not have any heat or electric and suspected arson. The fire was referred to the State Fire Marshall.

A few hours later at approximately 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a female on State Route 255 near State Route 800, a few miles south of Woodsfield, reporting that a naked man in his 50s was her entry way.

The caller said the male was pounding on her door, yelling that he had been stabbed and wanted into the residence.

Deputies and officers from the Woodsfield Police Department responded back to the same area where the structure fire had occurred to search for the naked male subject.

While the search was going on, another person called the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office from the same area reporting that someone was pounding on his door. The caller also stated that the subject had ripped the screen door to the residence.

Officers responded to the second address, but did not local the subject.

Monroe County Deputies and Woodsfield Police continued to check residences near where the incidents occurred.

When officers were attempting to make contact with a homeowner at one of the residences, a naked male subject jumped up in an ambush attack with a homemade spear. The subject charged the officers with the spear, coming within a few feet before the suspect was shot.

Officers from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Woodsfield Police Department provided first aid and life-saving techniques on the suspect until an EMS squad arrived.

The suspect was transported to the hospital.

The incident remains under investigation.
