Area Seabees donate painting

Former members of the Navy Construction Battalion, more commonly known as Seabees made a presentation of a limited edition painting to the Monroe County Commissioners at their regular meeting on Monday, March 13, 2017.

The picture was donated by Dale Dietrich, who served in Vietnam; Elliott Weber, who served in Guam and Hawaii; Bernard Smith, who served during World War II; Jeff Porter, who served in the Persian Gulf; and Dennis Dietrich.

The picture was painted by James Dietz in honor of the Seabees’ 75th anniversary, which was celebrated on March 5, 2017. It is dedicated to all Seabees and Civil Engineer Corps officers, past, present, and future.

The Seabees were formed in December of 1941, recruited from civilian construction trades.

The unit has served in several wards, performing construction work was it was most needed.

The picture will be hung in the Monroe County Courthouse where it can be viewed during regular business hours throughout the week.
