Chad Byers earns Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Rice University

Chad Byers, a 2010 Marietta College Physics graduate and Rickey Scholar, continued his educational goals at Rice University in Houston, Texas. At Rice University Chad earned both his Master of Applied Physics and his Ph.D. of Applied Physics. Chad was co-advised by Stephan Link and Christy Landes, professors of Chemistry and Electrical Engineering while at Rice.

Chad defended at Rice on November 24, 2015 with his thesis focused on active control of the optoelectronic properties of nanoscale plasmonic systems. He developed techniques to monitor, control, and fabricate tunable nanoscale structures using a conventional light microscope and electrochemistry. The impacts of his research are in optical switching, broadband light harvesting, nanoscale optical switches, and single nanoparticle catalysis and electrochemistry.
