Donations needed for Shop with a Cop event
Every year around Christmas time, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office tries to make sure children in need in Monroe County have a special holiday through its Shop with a Cop. In its first year, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office helped one child through the program. In the second year, two children received gifts at Christmas time. By Year three, that number jumped to 50, and the following year, it was up to 100. In its sixth year, Monroe County Sheriff Charles Black wants to see his office provide gifts for 100 children in the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District – and he’s hoping the community will help him do that.
“We are getting geared up (for Shop with a Cop),” Black said. “Our goal is to meet the amount we did last year, but we currently don’t have enough (donations). We’re about $4,146 short of our goal.”
Black hopes a last-minute surge of donations will help him meet his goal but said he’ll make sure that every student who participates in the program gets what he or she needs.
“People have been giving graciously, and we appreciate that,” Black said. “If we get more, we’ll appreciate that. We’ll take what we have and make sure the children are provided for.”
In addition to providing Christmas presents for area children, Black said the event offers an opportunity for his officers to create relationships he hopes last a lifetime.
“It’s quite a rewarding two days spending time with these children and having a meal with them,” Black said.
Black and his officers will take students from each elementary school in the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District to the Wal-Mart in New Martinsville, West Virginia, over two days in December.
Following the shopping, the officers and students enjoy a meal at Quinet’s Restaurant.
There is still time to donate to this event.
