Joseph Gilbert Bates, 87, of Woodsfield, passed away Wednesday Nov. 17, 2021, at Emerald Pointe Nursing and Rehab Center Barnesville. He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia Sept. 30, 1934, a son of the late Joseph A. Bates and Mabel Woomer Bates.

He graduated from Wheeling High School as well as West Liberty State University where he wrestled and played football. Joe taught at St. Johns Central High School where he taught biology and art as well as a coach for wrestling and football from 1965 – 1970. From 1970 until his retirement from Switzerland of Ohio Schools, he was the physical education teacher for Woodsfield Elementary, teaching art at Woodsfield and Skyvue High Schools, he also coached wrestling and football. In 1994 he won the OVAC Mr. Mat award.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta Cunningham Bates, of Woodsfield; daughter, Felicia L. Bates, of Woodsfield; brother Norman (Darris) Bates, of Nashville, Tennessee, many pets as well as his beloved family dog, Grady and cat, Sylvester.

Private services will be held with burial to follow in Oaklawn Cemetery Woodsfield. Arrangements by Bauer-Turner Funeral Home Woodsfield. Family request Memorial contributions be made in his name to the Charity of your choice.
