MARY JANE (BURKHARDT) HANEY

Mary Janet (Burkhardt) Haney, age 89, of Columbus, passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2022.

She was born June 21, 1933, in Woodsfield, the daughter of the late Francis G. and Dorthea (Ackerman) Burkhardt.

She is also predeceased in death by her beloved son, John Christopher Haney; grandsons, Ryan Andrew Hansen and Jon Hansen; and former husband, John Haney.

She is survived by her five daughters, Karen A. Glass, of Cleveland; Patricia L. Caruso, of Monroe, Georgia; Susan M. Protheroes, of Falls Church, Virginia; Joan E. Haney, of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Nancy E. Holloran, of Bonita Springs, Florida; brothers, Charles Burkhart (Sandy), of Pataskala, John David Burkhardt, of Clermont, Florida; special sister-in-law, Nancy Burkhart, of Williamsburg, Virginia; special cousin, Marie Ring; and 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Janet has a special bond with cousin, Marie Ring. As Marie once said, “We have always felt like sisters. We both came up on the same milk.” Janet’s mother Dorthea and Janet’s Aunt Thelma Weber were both pregnant at the same time. Thelma’s baby, Marie, was born without complications, but Janet was premature, weighing only 2 pounds and born in a farmhouse in Woodsfield. Because of the premature birth, Dorthea had no breast milk so her sister, Thelma, provided the life-saving milk. Janet’s father, Francis, fed her with an eyedropper for many weeks until she grew and was able to take regular milk.

Janet loved to sit on her patio at her home in Clintonville having coffee with neighbors and friends before she moved to the Villas at St. Therese. Later she moved to Mother Angeline Mc-Crory Manor. There she enjoyed the loving attention of the nuns, nurses and aids, many of them having cared for her mother, Dorthea, 15 years before. Special thanks to the nurses and aids from Mother Angeline and Mt. Carmel Hospice.

Service to be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, at the Mother Angeline McCrory Manor Chapel, 5199 E. Broad St., Columbus. Visitation will be held one half hour before service. Burial will be held at Resurrection Cemetery.
