PAUL REVERE PATTERSON

We mourn the passing of Paul Revere Patterson, 88, who left us peacefully on September 5, 2024, surrounded by family at Liza’s Place in Wheeling, W.V. Born on March 18, 1936, in Bellaire, Ohio, to the late Archie Leonard and Mildred (Tharp) Patterson, Paul was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hazel Annette Patterson; his brothers, Leonard, Ray, and Harry Patterson; his sister, Anna Mae Sampson; his daughter, Dorothy “Dodie” Switzer; his son, Leonard “Arch” Patterson; and his granddaughter, Brandi Thompson.
Paul was a man of remarkable strength and intelligence, known for his unwavering love of music, his friends, and his larger-than-life attitude. His vibrant personality made him the heart and soul of every gathering. His spirited stories and big blue eyes lit up any room, bringing joy and camaraderie to those fortunate enough to know him. Beneath his tough and stubborn exterior was a heart of goldalways ready to lend a hand, wipe away a tear, and support those he loved.
Paul will be remembered as one bad-ass dude who was tough as nails. He was a successful businessman in Bellaire, where he owned Pinch Run Tavern and First Ward Tavern. A true “Pinch Run” man through and through, he was also an OBX and Las Vegas enthusiast, and a lover of all things Irish. His many talents and passions included being a bridge painter, an adventurer, a musician, a civil engineer, a licensed surveyor, a meteorologist, a hunter and fisherman, a masterful speller of words, a rattlesnake stomper, a pilot, a farmer, a “dancing fool”, a boxer, and pretty much anything else you could think of – he likely did that too. From enjoying a cold Corona or Guinness to playing his instruments, Paul truly lived life to the fullest.
His legacy lives on through the countless friendships he cherished and the love he so willingly gave. Paul is survived by his daughter Christine Shields (Jeff) of Gloucester, Va.; his son Max Thompson (Julie) of St. Clairsville, Ohio; his daughter Sammie Yamagata (Greg) of Las Vegas, Nev.; his daughter Charity Fato (Bryan) of Wheeling; his niece Penny Swiger (Tim) of Moundsville, W.V.; his nephew Larry Patterson (Mary) of Bellaire; his sister Frances Sue Long of Bellaire; nine grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
Paul’s laughter, spirit, and larger-than-life presence will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace, knowing he was loved by many and will be forever remembered.
Friends will be received from 12 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10 until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home in Woodsfield. He will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Abbey in Woodsfield.
