Sharon Leah Mallett Calder, 75, of Woodsfield, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 7, 2024, with family by her side. She was born on September 5, 1949, in New Martinsville, W.V., to the late Margery L. (Givens) and Harry E. Mallett of Hannibal, Ohio. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Lori Ann Mallett.
Sharon graduated from River High School and attended college at The Ohio State University, West Liberty State College and Glenville State College, graduating from the latter with a Bachelor’s degree in English. She later obtained her Master’s Degree in Guidance & Counseling from University of Dayton. During her 35 years of employment with Switzerland of Ohio School District where she worked in the varied roles of teacher, guidance counselor and ultimately supervisor of the district’s Talented and Gifted Program, Sharon modeled leadership and professionalism, and positively impacted the lives of countless individuals. Upon retiring from Switzerland of Ohio School District, she continued to work for an additional year as supervisor of the Talented and Gifted Program for Cambridge City Schools, Cambridge, Ohio.
Sharon was an articulate, well-read and determined woman who had a great knowledge of sports, easily answered obscure Jeopardy! questions, and understood how to truly listen when others spoke. She had a wonderful laugh and a beautiful smile that lit up any room she entered. She believed that every person had a life story worth sharing; she did not judge others, but rather accepted and welcomed them as they were. She believed the best about people, was grateful for her close-knit family and kind friends, and subscribed to the theory “There but for the Grace of God go I.”
Sharon was also a talented photographer and gardener, and loved books. She found joy in sunrises and sunsets, blooming flowers, reading and writing, walking on the beach, laughing at her dogs’ antics, baking cookies, sewing and quilting, designing jewelry, spending time with her family, and watching birds at the feeder and horses grazing in the field. She was a Christian by faith, but also found meaning and guidance in the works of Sharon Salzberg and Thich Nhat Hanh. She believed in peace, compassion and education, in both theory and practice.
An amazing mother and grandmother, Sharon was loving, nurturing, always supportive and encouraged the chasing-of-dreams. She was adored by her daughter Amie, son-in-law Doug and grandson Nathan (and really, by many people who knew her). Even when managing health issues, she remained as present and active as possible in the lives of her family and attended Nathan’s school and athletic events as frequently as she was able. She had the seeming ability to move mountains. Her absence on earth leaves a void that will never be filled, only tempered by the memory of her beautiful, resilient soul.
Sharon endured an extended and difficult illness, experiencing multiple setbacks in health, yet she resisted bitterness and instead consistently chose to be positive and give thanks for the blessings in her life. She was a woman of remarkable strength who persevered no matter what challenges she faced. Her greatest legacies will perhaps be her kindness and compassion, the grace she extended to those who needed it, and the deep love and consideration that she gave so selflessly to her family and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband of 30 years, Jerry P. Calder, of Woodsfield; her loving daughter Amie Tschappat McMullin, son-in-law Douglas McMullin and grandson Nathan, of Saint Clairsville; her beloved brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary (Sally) Mallett of Saint Clairsville, Rick (Sue) Mallett of Spartanburg, S.C., and David (Julie) Mallett of Rocky River, Ohio. She was a special and well-loved aunt to nieces Tracy Mallett (Darin and Sebastian); Becky White (Marty and children Isaac, Annalee and Mallory); Courtney Mallett; Christy Garrison (Craig and children Kate, Kendall, Cooper, and Harper); Abigail Mallett; and nephews Jack, Brett and Luke Mallett.
Sharon will also be deeply missed by her stepchildren Krista Calder (Hannah and Brandon Duffy), Daniel Calder (Chloe and Reese) and Jonathan Calder (Vickie and children Caylin, Cy and Camden).
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Valley Hospice visiting nurses Darla and Demetria, and to the nurses, aides, chefs and all staff of Liza’s Place, as well as to Davida Baker, for providing excellent, loving care to Sharon in her last weeks of life. While no services will be held at this time, information regarding a Celebration of Life ceremony will be forthcoming.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sharon’s honor to Liza’s Place (Wheeling, WV) or Crossed Paws Animal Shelter in Woodsfield, Ohio.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield.
