Area athletes fall short of state dreams
The competition was fierce and so was the weather during the preliminaries for the Division III regional meet Wednesday, May 24 at Massillon Perry High School.
Heavy rains slowed down area sprinters and hindered their attempts at finishing in the top four and advancing to the state meet in Columbus.
Wednesday’s preliminaries saw the area’s seven regional qualifiers shooting for a spot in the top eight to qualify for Friday, May 26’s finals.
Unfortunately, the competition was too fast.
River senior Chase Brown had the best finish for area athletes at the regional meet.
Brown was 11th in the 200, finishing in 24.16, less than half a second behind eighth-place.
Also for River’s boys, senior Braden Whetsell finished 15th in the 100 in 12.45.
Monroe Central’s girls had the most representatives at the regional meet, with four girls competing in five events.
